The small city of Loreto belongs to the Orellana Province and is located in the northern part of the Ecuadorian amazon. From Quito it takes 6 hours and a half by bus or 5 hours by car, on the road Quito – Baeza – Loreto – Hollín – Coca, or only at 45 minutes by plane to reach the City of Coca, which is less than an hour drive from Loreto.
Then, aboard a 4 wheel drive (provided from Loreto) Bigal River Biological Reserve is an hour away from Loreto. Once we have reached the small community known as “8 de Diciembre”, it takes a little more than an hour on foot, an easy hike through the forest to reach the Reserve´s facilities. Nevertheless, at this point we are always using mules to carry the backpacks and everything we need for the stay, which means that we can fully enjoy the walk and take advantage of glancing our first colorful birds (461 species recorded up till now).
